overload
this series explores questions such as "can you draw one picture of your entire walk to the station?", or even "what colour is a trip to the bank?".
perception is made from glimpses of objects, colours, shapes assembled and reassembled in the mind's eye like a jigsaw to a plan set by experience and expectation. our mental images are very much made rather than taken, they are edited constructions: to see everything would overwhelm us in sensory overload. moreover, time compartmentalises our perception: we struggle conceptually to "see" single images that encompass more than even a fraction of a second. we record an event as a collection, a timeline of the pictures constructed by our brains.
the camera and imaging processing technology is able to go where our minds cannot.
these images are made from multiple blurred glimpses recorded as i pass through the land- or town-scape and then digitally overlaid to create an image recalling the impression left by the journey. they are compressions of time, collecting and archiving the entirety of an event as a single, barely decipherable, image.
the image titles are a uk postal area code, date and time range.
