our visual perception has fascinated me since childhood. i am intrigued by how our minds process only some of the information from our eyes, stabilize it and combine it with both memory and expectation to create what we see. our internal image of the world is personal and unique; forged by visual recollection of our past and by anticipation of the future.
these images seek to recreate the effect of having my eyes dilated for a hospital retina examination. my vision became swamped by light, distorted and blurred, and, although the detail of the world around me was lost, i could still discern what was occurring. i wondered just how much information we need to take from our eyes in order to see with our brains.
